- the combination of a scientific view with mystical stories of native peoples got me interested in it, I wanted to learn a little more about the nature through this prism
- the book turned out to be more romantic and poetic, personal to the author (from childhood memories to the author's stories as a mother)
- the indigenous peoples of North America could be more balanced in their relationship with nature than modern societies, which is reflected in their culture and habits (this is the main message - reciprocity in relations with nature is extremely important for humanity and this knowledge was lost). there were many facts about the local flora and fauna of North America (the difficult fate of salamanders, some plants can't live without each other or at least make their lives more efficient in pairs, trees "communicate" far away, some lichens are edible, etc.)
- I loved all the detailed descriptions of ponds, plants, trees, mosses and rains. for people who want to enjoy beautiful sentimental stories about nature, feel closer to forests and trees while sitting in a chair and be inspired to new better relationships with it. although you should be prepared for repetition, sometimes not be picky about scientific facts and some of the author's political views

📖 What Art Is. 2014

- not my first read about the definition of art, but this one offers more of an American perspective
- gradually uncovers the author's definition, evolving into something indefinable
- packed with references and topics to study(movements, people) which can go way beyond the book
- I gained: the author's definition of art, how cameras changed painting, more about modernism and post-modernism, techniques and movements, American art particularly and its influence
- I'd recommend it for those who want to understand what artists do, modern art and art overall
